The KCII Area Game of the Week takes us to Wayland tonight for a matchup of long-time Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division rivals when the WACO Warriors entertain the Hillcrest Academy Ravens. The boys game is for a share of first-place in the North. WACO comes in with a 12-3 overall record after a 62-49 win over Sigourney Thursday. WACO is 8-1 in conference. On the season, the Warriors average 56 points per game and give up 46, shooting 41% from the field, 32% from three and 59% at the line with 30 rebounds, 15 assists, 11 steals and 13 turnovers per game. Individually, Christian Stacy’s 19 points and three steals per night are best to go with Clayton Miller’s seven rebounds and Isaac Egli’s four assists.
Hillcrest Academy is 14-1 this year, 11-1 in the Superconference after handling Wapello Tuesday 68-33 behind Mason Bender’s 14 point effort. On the season, the Ravens score 67 points per game and give up 40 on 52% shooting, 33% from three and 63% at the line with 27 boards, 18 assists, 12 steals and 10 turnovers per game. Individually, Seth Ours paces the Ravens at 15 points per game, Mason Bender at seven boards and Rowan Miller with six assists and three steals. WACO has won six straight in the series including an Alumni Night game in Kalona before Christmas 48-46. The Ravens last win over the Warriors was 2018.
The WACO girls are 11-5 overall this year and 8-2 in league play after a 64-42 setback against Sigourney Thursday. On the season, the Warriors average 47 points per game and give up 41 on 30% shooting, 22% from three and 47% at the line with 33 rebounds, 10 steals, eight assists and 16 turnovers per game. Individually, Brenna Graber posts 15 points three steals and three assists per game. Ella Huisenga leads on the glass at eight boards per night.
Hillcrest Academy is 7-8 this year, 5-7 in the North after a 52-40 win over Wapello Tuesday where Malia Yoder poured in 20 points. On the season, the Ravens average 49 points per game and give up 48 on 33% shooting, 25% from three and 49% at the line with 35 rebounds, 16 steals, 11 assists and 16 turnovers per game. Individually, Claire Withrow goes for 16 points per game, Malia Yoder five steals and four assists and Delaney Shaw 10 boards per night. WACO won the December meeting between these schools 45-38 and has won the last 14 in the series, with the Ravens last win in 2014.
