Both the Highland Huskies and Lone Tree Lions scored conference wins in girls’ basketball Friday night. Highland defeated Wapello 53-37, turning a one-point deficit after a quarter of play into a 28-18 halftime lead and going up by as much as 19 points in the second half.

Freshman Kamryn Fink had game highs of 19 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots to lead the Huskies, while junior Emersyn Schutlz scored nine points.

Sophomore Hailey Brun and junior Mackenzie Davis combined for 13 points, 22 rebounds, six assists and seven steals to help Highland win its fourth out of the last five games and improve to 12-5, including an 8-5 record in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

The boys didn’t have the same luck for the Huskies, suffering a 56-50 loss at Wapello. A 19-9 run going into halftime put the Indians in front 26-19, and they would stay in front the rest of the way, dropping Highland to 1-11 in the Super Conference North and 1-13 overall.

Lone Tree won the girls’ half of their doubleheader with Pekin Friday night 62-26, securing a fifth straight victory. The Lions have won 12 of their last 13 overall to move to 14-3, including an 11-3 mark in conference play.

The Lone Tree boys would not get the same result. Despite a five-point halftime lead against Pekin, a 23-7 run put the Panthers up 44-33 on their way to winning 61-50.

Domonic Garcia scored 16 points to pace the Lions, while fellow juniors Emmett Burke and Reece Holbrook had 11 points each and combined for 16 rebounds. With the defeat, Lone Tree drops to 5-10 in total and 4-9 in league play. Both Lion basketball teams play again tonight at English Valleys.
