The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams continued stringing together wins Friday, sweeping a River Valley Conference doubleheader in Wellman against West Liberty.

The Golden Hawk girls set the tone, smashing the Comets 65-22. The Hawks sprinted to a 17-4 lead after one and 36-11 halftime advantage. Mid-Prairie slammed the door with an 18-4 fourth quarter run. Golden Hawk head coach Danny Hershberger joined the KCII Radio Coaches Corner Saturday to talk about his team’s performance.

Hershberger said, “Our defensive effort was outstanding! They have a couple of girls that score a lot of points for them and we want to make sure that we made it really difficult on them and our girls stepped up and did a great job. We wanted to make sure we took care of the basketball. We finished with only nine turnovers. Anytime that number is in single digits you’re going to have a good offensive night. We hit some threes in the first quarter, Brooklyn Schneider hits two threes, Izzy Kite had a three, and once we knocked those down, we were able to get it inside to Callie Huber and Brylee Gearhart. Our ball movement was good, we were able to get some good looks at the basket.”

The Golden Hawks hit eight threes, won the glass by 18, and had 15 steals as a group. Callie Huber went double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Brooklyn Schneider had 15 points. Morgyn Bender, Katelyn Harland and Brylee Gearhart each had three assists. The win is the third in a row for the Hawks who run their record to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in conference as West Liberty drops to 6-9.

The Mid-Prairie boys used a second half comeback to get by West Liberty 46-39. The Comets clamped down on defense early, leading 15-7 after one and 25-22 at half. The Golden Hawks won the third quarter 13-8 and the fourth 11-6 for the win. Golden Hawk head coach Daren Lambert broke down the win on Saturday’s KCII Radio Coaches Corner.

Lambert said, “Overall (West Liberty) did a great job of making us take some tough shots. We struggled to hit shots consistently throughout the game. We did have some timely shots. Defense definitely carried us and the second half we dug in. Total team effort on that end and rebounding the basketball. When you bring your defense with you, you can find wins in different ways. I’m proud of the guys response and effort. Bryce Henry had 11 points for us, Brady (Weber) had seven, Brooks (Weber) hit a big three for us, Ace (Peck) had five and a big three toward the end of the game, Hudson Ehrenfelt had seven points.”

The Hawks hit seven threes, pulled in 31 boards and had 12 team assists. Bryce Henry put up 11 points, Conner Wiles had six boards and Brady Weber six assists to lead the way. Mid-Prairie’s third win in a row pushes their record to 12-2 on the year, 7-1 in conference. The Hawks are back on the court tonight when they host Mount Pleasant.
