The Columbus Wildcats rolled to a 51-29 win at Wapello in Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls’ basketball Tuesday night. Columbus jumped out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, and they added to a 12-point advantage at halftime with a 15-2 run to start the second half and pull away.
Lily Coil had a huge night to lead the Wildcats with 24 points scored and five made three-point shots, as well as 12 rebounds and seven steals. Fellow senior Frannie Sosa and junior Isabel Rendon added 13 points each and combined for eight steals as Columbus improves to 12-2 in the Super Conference North and 15-3 overall.
The Wildcat boys would not have the same good fortune, losing to Wapello 59-53. Columbus held a one-point lead at the end of the first half, but an 18-8 run in the third quarter put the Indians in front, and while the ‘Cats would keep it close, they would never come all the way back.
Sophomore Ellis Hills-Carrier scored a game-high 23 points for Columbus, while senior Juan Chairez had eight points and 10 rebounds. The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-11, including a 4-9 record in conference play. Both Columbus teams next hit the hardwood tomorrow night at home against WACO.
