Both the Sigourney Savages and Keota Eagles swept conference basketball doubleheaders on Tuesday. Sigourney started things by taking down Belle Plaine in the girls’ game with a dominant defensive effort, winning 51-4. A ninth straight win means the Savages improve to 9-3 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 14-4 overall.

Sigourney also controlled the boys’ game from the start, building on a 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter with a 19-9 run going into halftime and ultimately knocking off Belle Plaine 67-37.

John Berg had game highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Savages, while fellow junior Solon Yates hit four three-point baskets and scored 16 points. Sophomore Landon Conrad added three three-pointers and 11 points as Sigourney raises its record to 12-5, including an 8-4 mark in conference play.

Keota started its sweep of English Valleys with the girls’ team rallying to win 48-45. The Eagles faced a 21-12 halftime deficit but turned things around to only trail by a point going into the final period and would come out on top, moving their record to 5-8 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 9-10 in total.

The Keota boys cruised past English Valleys 80-43, taking an 11-point lead into halftime before ripping off a 19-8 run to open the second half and finishing the game on a 23-8 run.

The win means the Eagles jump to 15-3, including an 11-2 conference record. While both Keota are off until this coming Tuesday when they face Belle Plaine, Sigourney will get its crack at English Valleys in their next games tomorrow.
