It’s Round Two for one of southeast Iowa’s longest running high school basketball rivalries when the Washington Demons host Mount Pleasant tonight for a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.
The Washington girls come in with a 5-12 record, including a 3-4 mark in the Southeast Conference. The Demons have been led by a stingy defense that allows just over 42 points per game, while junior guard Adalyn Long paces the offense by scoring almost 12 points per contest.
Washington will be taking on a Mount Pleasant team that is 3-12 and that they beat 57-17 when they met earlier this season. Head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports that, with another win over their rivals, the Demons are poised to finish the season strong.
“Things are starting to turn for us,” Rugg says. “You can tell [the players] are starting to get some confidence in what we’re trying to do and in themselves. I think we’re going to start getting on a little run here.”
The Washington boys are looking for their third win in the last four games. While they sit at 7-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play, the Demons have gotten strong play from senior Logan McDole, who is averaging almost 12 points, four-and-a-half rebounds and three-and-a-half assists a game.
Washington takes on a one-win Mount Pleasant team that they knocked off 61-50 when they met in December. Demons head coach Collin Stark says beating the Panthers again will take another good defensive effort.
“Defense is what got us there,” Stark says. “We got some stops [and] got some steals into transition. That’s where we are at our best, when we are dictating what is happening on the defensive end.”
