“It was really fun!”

“It’s amazing!”

“It’s just awesome!”

That’s how Rachel Sands and Kendall and Lauren Hinrichsen described a convincing 56-26 win on their Senior Night for the Washington Demons over their rivals from Mount Pleasant on Friday in girls’ basketball, and it’s hard not to see why.

After a slim first-quarter lead, Washington busted the game open with a 21-1 run to end the first half leading 31-10 and never looked back, thanks largely to a huge shooting night where they made eight three-point baskets.

Junior Adalyn Long scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Demons and knocked down three of the team’s eight three-pointers. Kendall Hinrichsen added 11 points and hit one from deep, while Lauren Hinrichsen had a pair of triples on her way to seven points.

Rachel Sands added a trey for her career varsity points as Washington improves to 6-12 overall and 4-4 in the Southeast Conference. After the game, Demons head coach Shannon Rugg told KCII Sports his team’s stellar effort had been in the works for a while now.

“We’ve been doing that in practice,” Rugg said, “and we’ve been seeing little bits of it here and there in games, and we’re just starting to put everything together and be a little more consistent in our play.”

The Washington boys would not get the same celebratory result. A tight game all night with Mount Pleasant was tied at 41 going into the fourth quarter, and the Demons only trailed by one with just under two minutes to go. But the Panthers finished the game on an 8-0 run to win 62-53.

Senior Logan McDole led Washington with 12 points, while sophomore Nic Stone scored 11 and junior Rajan Roth had 10. The loss drops the Demons to 4-4 in conference play and 7-10 in total.

Both Washington basketball teams next play Monday at Mid-Prairie. You can catch the rivalry showdown between the Demons and the Golden Hawks starting just after 5 p.m. Monday on KCII.
