The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves won both of their basketball battles Friday at Wapello. The WMU girls turned a tie game into a one-point halftime lead, but an 18-8 run to start the third quarter is where they seized control on their way to a 53-36 victory.
Junior Madisen Kellogg led Winfield-Mount Union by scoring a game-high 19 points and coming up with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Senior Josie Nelson added eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Wolves improve to 3-12 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 4-15 overall.
A 17-9 run going into halftime put the WMU boys up 26-15 against Wapello, and a 21-8 run to open the second half put the game away in a 65-34 win. Senior Jake Edwards came just shy of a triple-double to lead Winfield-Mount Union with 18 points, eight assists and nine steals.

The Highland Huskies also picked up a victory Friday at Pekin in girls’ basketball. Highland built on their one-point halftime lead with a 17-8 run to go in front 46-36 in the second half, and they would hold on from there to win 60-49.
Freshman Kamryn Fink made 12 out of 12 free-throw attempts on her way to another double-double of 22 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots to pace the Huskies.
Junior Emersyn Schultz hit three three-pointers and had 20 points for Highland, while sophomore Katelyn Thomann added 12 points, eight boards, four assists and seven steals to help the Huskies move to 10-5 in the Super Conference North and 14-6 in total.
The Highland boys would not have the same luck, falling behind to Pekin 22-6 after a quarter of play and ultimately losing 65-18. The Huskies drop to 1-16 with the defeat, including a 1-13 league record.
