Kalona residents will see increases to their utility rates this summer. At their recent meeting, the City Council agreed to make adjustments to the water and sewer rates.
The city has not made a final decision what the rates will be for water and sewer. However, according to the proposed infrastructure projects, the new sewer system will cost $7 million, the new filter will cost $1.2 million and the water plant expansion will cost $2.35 million. They begin in July and will take the city three years to fund the projects.
It will come into effect starting July 1st. The council did have some concerns with the increases in rates, but DNR requirements and water-plant updates are needed. The council directed staff to work with Eocene for funding assistance, since they have a grant-writing contract for funding assistance.
