The next edition of the KCII Area Game of the Week features a pair of local boys teams in Riverside tonight, when Highland hosts Keota. The Huskies are 1-18 on the season, 1-14 in conference after a 56-51 loss to Cedar Valley Christian at home Friday. The Huskies lone win was over Wapello before Christmas. On the year, the Huskies score 45 per game and give up 68 with 35% shooting, 22% from three and 53% at the line. Individually, Highland is led by Bryce Hazlett with 14 points, Louis Horak with seven rebounds, William Dunbar with two steals and Logan McFarland with an assist. This week, Highland head coach Bill Zywiec joined KCII Sports to talk about his teams recent play.
Zywiec said, “In the second half of our L-M game, I thought we picked things up. We got the ball moving. We were very unselfish with it. Keota is very well coached. They’ve had a great team the last six or seven years. They’ll be extremely disciplined.”
Keota is 16-3 on the year, and champions of the east division of the South Iowa Cedar League. The Eagles pounded Belle Plaine last time out 82-37 Tuesday, led by 28 team assists and 14 steals. Billie Kindred posted a monster 24 point 12 rebound double double. This year Keota scores 70 points per game and gives up 51, shooting 45% from the floor, 33% from three and 56% at the line, with 39 rebounds, 19 assists, 10 steals and 11 turnovers per night. Individually, Kindred is at 24 points and 14 boards per game. Chase Haifley leads with eight assists and three steals. Head coach Dan Stout joined the KCII Radio Coaches Corner Saturday to talk about his team building toward the postseason.
Stout said, “We’re playing team basketball. We’re getting a lot of assists. Guys don’t care who is scoring. They just want to see us be successful. We’re rebounding the ball really well. Our big guys inside with Billie Kindred, and Jace (Chalupa) and Brody (Greiner), Isaac Striegel coming in off the bench. As we go into the last week of the season we always approach that as ‘it’s tournament time!'”
Keota has won seven straight in the series over the Huskies, including a 74-36 victory last year. Catch all of the action live tonight on the free KCII3 Stream, exclusively at KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Area Game of the Week Pregame Show at 7p.m. And tip at 7:30 live from Riverside.
