U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley shared his thoughts on the effect that would come from shutting down The United States Agency for International Development with KCII. “The USAID, they give away our foreign aid. In other words we appropriate the money, and it goes to that agency, and they give it around the globe. Normally that would not be controversial, but Elon Musk feels that there is something not lawful in their operation, and I think momentarily, until we get to the bottom of it, they are going to stop it. The bottom line is tax dollars should be spent wisely, and to further US objectives. And I guess there is some feeling that that hasn’t happened.” USAID said thousands of employees would be put on leave. In a statement, the agency said exceptions would be made for “mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs”, but it is unclear what exactly that includes. Much of USAID’s budget is spent on health programs, such as offering polio vaccinations in countries where the disease still circulates and helping to stop the spread of viruses which have the potential to cause a pandemic.
