A strong finish to the week for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves was highlighted by a 45-36 victory over Mediapolis in boys’ basketball Friday night at Pekin as part of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout.

A tight game for most of the night saw Winfield-Mount Union enter the fourth and final quarter down a point, but the Wolves started howling at the right time and closed the game on a 13-3 run.

Senior Jake Edwards did it all to lead WMU, putting up 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals. Sophomore Cody Milks hit three three-point shots and added 11 points and nine rebounds to help Winfield-Mount Union improve to 13-8.

The Wolves were coming off an impressive 74-36 win over Rivefront Collegiate the night before. A 22-4 lead at the end of the first quarter was just the beginning of a dominant performance.

Edwards paced WMU with a career night, scoring 38 points on 15-of-27 shooting while also hitting five three-pointers. The point guard nearly made it a triple-double with eight rebounds, nine steals and six assists, while fellow senior Cooper Buffington had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the pack.

Winfield-Mount Union also picked up a Super Conference Shootout win in girls’ basketball Friday, knocking off Cedar Valley Christian 61-24. The Wolves raced out to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter and built a 31-point advantage by halftime.

A pair of doubles-doubles led the way for WMU. Junior Madisen Kellogg had 23 points, 15 rebounds and three steals, while freshman Kynlee Buffington finished with 18 points, 10 boards, four steals and three blocked shots.

A third win in the last four games helps Winfield-Mount Union move to 5-16. The ladies will now gear up for the start of the playoffs Thursday night when they visit Keota in the first round in Class 1A Region 7. Meanwhile, the WMU boys finish the regular season Tuesday against Pekin.
