The playoffs begin for Washington Demon girls’ basketball tomorrow night on KCII when Washington travels to Mediapolis for the Class 3A Region 1 quarterfinals. Washington enters the postseason with a record of 6-15, but they’ve been a sturdy defensive team all season, allowing only 43 points per game.

While junior Adalyn Long leads the team by scoring 12-and-a-half points per contest, the offense has been able to score only 41 points a game in total, leading to six losses by a single-digit margin.

Demons head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports that his team will always have a chance in every game, they just need to find a way to hit the big shots.

“We’re going to compete,” Rugg says, “and it’s going to come down to two, three [or] four possessions. We’ve just got to figure out that one last step of making some plays.”

Washington is facing a Mediapolis squad that is ranked 13th in the state in Class 3A and has lost only once in 21 games this season. That includes a 48-37 win when they hosted the Demons back in December.

Junior Amelia Grier paces the Bulldogs by scoring over 14 points per game, while one of the highest-scoring teams in the state is also one of its most dominant on defense, allowing less than 30 points per contest to their opponents.

Washington’s last postseason win came in 2021. You can hear Demon playoff girls’ basketball on KCII tomorrow evening on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app, starting with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 6:30.
