Both the Highland Huskies and Lone Tree Lions moved on in the Class 1A Region 7 girls’ basketball playoffs with first-round victories Thursday. Highland defeated Wapello 48-29, taking a 13-6 lead in the first quarter and still leading by seven points entering the final period, where they would close out a win with a 16-4 run.

Freshman Kamryn Fink led the Huskies with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four steals., while sophomore Hailey Brun added 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Emersyn Schultz nearly had another double-double with eight points, 11 boards and five steals as Highland improves to 16-7.

Lone Tree rolled past Cedar Valley Christian 69-20, building on an already commanding 28-10 lead after a quarter of play by shutting out the Huskies in the next two frames.

The Lions’ 10th straight victory and 17th win in the last 18 games raises their record to 19-3. Both teams now advance to the Region 7 quarterfinals Tuesday, with Lone Tree hosting Holy Trinity Catholic and Highland playing host to the Hillcrest Academy Ravens.
