It was all Sigourney from the word go last night on KCII, as the Savages streaked past WACO in a girls regional quarterfinal basketball contest by a final of 62-33 on their home floor to punch their ticket to Friday night’s Class 1A Region 7 Semifinal.
The Savages began the game on a 21-4 run that spanned all eight minutes of the first period. Sigourney would add on 14 more in the second to take a 22-point lead into the halftime locker room. The Savages hit seven threes in the first half, three of which by senior McKinley Chittick, and only committed two unofficial turnovers. Asserting their dominance once again, Sigourney outscored WACO by three in the third with two more Chittick threes. A 25-point advantage was more than enough for the home Savages, as they were able to cruise to the finish line in the fourth frame.
Unofficially, Sigourney won all facets of the contest, including rebounds by six and turnovers by five. Sigourney hit 12 three-pointers in the game, including the aforementioned five from downtown by McKinley Chittick, who finished as the game-high scorer with 19. Chittick was named Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game, and joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about the win. “Our mentality was just come out strong the whole game and play all four quarters as fast and hard as possible. Don’t give up at any point of the game,” Chittick said. “Everyone’s energy and playing as a team really got us going and just really helped us.”
WACO was led by Brenna Graber’s 15 points.
Sigourney Head Coach Kaylee Weber also earned her first career regional victory as the head woman of Sigourney girls basketball. She spoke on that subject with KCII Sports postgame. “It feels really nice,” Weber said. “My girls worked really hard for this. I’m really glad we got the first round bye, and in this game they [my players] worked so hard. I’m really proud of them, and it does feel really nice.”
With the win, Sigourney moves to 18-5 ahead of a regional semifinal matchup on Friday at home against Lone Tree. The winner of that matchup will face either Highland or Springville for a chance at state. WACO ends their season at 15-9, and will say goodbye to lone senior, Ella Huisenga.
