The high school boys’ basketball playoffs continue tonight, and the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Sigourney Savages are hoping to earn their way to their respective district finals.
Winfield-Mount Union is on the road taking on Burlington Notre Dame in the Class 1A District 8 semifinals. The Wolves have a record of 14-9 and are coming off a 51-36 win over Pekin in the first round of the Substate 4 playoffs.
Jake Edwards leads WMU by averaging nearly 19 points, five assists and five steals per game, and while he scored a team-high 13 points on Monday, fellow senior Cooper Buffington nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds against Pekin, while junior Nicholas Sparrow made plays at guard as well with 12 points and five assists.
Winfield-Mount Union is taking on a Burlington Notre Dame team that is 17-4 and ranked 10th in the state in Class 1A. Junior Shay Stephens does it all for the Nikes, posting almost 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and three steals per contest. The Wolves used a wild fourth-quarter rally to beat Notre Dame 51-49 last season when the two teams met in a district final.
Sigourney will face Montezuma in the 1A District 9 semis. The Savages’ 56-41 victory over HLV in the first round is their 12th win in the last 14 games, raising their record to 16-6.
Junior John Berg dominated in the low post again for Sigourney on Monday with game highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds, keeping up his pace of 16.5 points and 12.5 boards a game.
Senior Isaac Bruns pours in 16.5 points per game for the Savages, who are pitted against a Montezuma team that is 19-3. The Braves are paced by one of the highest-scoring players in the state in junior Brady Boulton, who puts up over 28.5 points per contest and hits more than half of his shot attempts.
Boulton also shoots over 43 percent on three-pointers and over 90% on free throws to rank among the state’s best in shooting. Montezuma edged out Sigourney in a 71-68 thriller when the two teams met earlier this season. Both the Savages and the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves will tip off their district semifinal games this evening at 7.
