The Columbus Wildcats were eliminated from the girls’ basketball playoffs Friday night after they lost 53-49 to Danville in the Class 2A Region 2 semifinals. Despite Columbus taking a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, Danville finished the first half on a 13-4 run to lead 26-20.
The Bears would stay in front the rest of the way, stretching their advantage to seven points after three quarters and up to double digits with three-and-a-half minutes to play.
Junior Isabel Rendon scored a team-high 16 points for the Wildcats, while senior Frannie Sosa had 14 points and four rebounds. Senior point guard Ariana Vergara added eight points, five assists and five steals as Columbus wraps up the season with a record of 18-5.
It’s the winningest season for the program since at least 2007, including the Wildcats’ first-ever conference championship. Columbus will now say goodbye to six seniors, including Sosa, Vergara, Lily Coil, Aracely Garza, Madeleine Howell and Daisy Cole.
