The Sigourney Savages sit at the doorstep of the girls’ basketball state tournament for the first time in over 30 years as they face Springville tonight on KCII in the Class 1A Region 7 final.
Sigourney has a record of 19-5 and won 14 of its last 15 to reach the number-14 ranking in the state. The Savages have been one of the state’s most complete teams, allowing only 42 points per game while also being the fourth-highest scoring team in Class 1A.
Sigourney can credit such success to a balance of veteran talent and fresh, new faces. Jospehine Moore dominates in the low post for the Savages with team highs of 18-and-a-half points and 11 rebounds per contest as one of the team’s senior leaders, alongside McKinley Chittick and Ava Fisch.
Meanwhile, freshman Brynn Clarahan has been a breakout star for Sigourney, affecting all aspects of the game by averaging nearly 17 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists and 6.5 steals a game. Savages head coach Kaylee Weber tells KCII Sports her first year leading her alma mater has been a special one because she has special players.
“Most first-year [coaches] don’t make it very far in the tournament,” Weber says. “I have a great group of girls that’s allowed me to get there. They believe in me [and] I believe in them. We’ll come prepared on Wednesday.”
If Sigourney is going to make it to state, they’ll have to go through seventh-ranked Springville, who comes in with a record of 19-4. Behind six-foot-two-inch-tall junior Rowan Jacobi and her 23 points and 12 boards per game, the Orioles have won eight straight and are looking to get back to state for the eighth time in the last 11 years.
Meanwhile, the Savages seek their first state bid since 1992. You can catch Sigourney girls’ basketball battle Springville for a spot in Des Moines in the Class 1A Region 7 finals this evening on all KCII signals and streams and available in both KCII apps, starting with pregame coverage at 6:30.
