The three libraries that make up the Washington County Library system were presented the distinguished Harvey Holden Outstanding Service Award on Monday night. Washington Economic Development Group, also known as WEDG, gives the award annually. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh shared how the award is named after the late Harvey Holden who served as Mayor of Washington, “Both a successful farmer and businessman, who also gave back by serving on numerous boards and nonprofits, not unlike what we see here today. Mr. Holden was passionate about Washington and dedicated service. He exemplified the spirit with which we honor yearly with this award. In his memory, we recognize individuals who continue his legacy of exceptional dedication to our community.”

The Washington Free Public Library, the Kalona Public Library, and the Wellman Scofield Library will each now have a plaque to display for the honor. The libraries were described as “vital community hubs” that provide resources to area residents.

The award has been presented annually since 1998.
