Both the Washington Demons and Columbus Wildcats got the indoor portion of their track and field seasons started by competing at the annual Dickinson Relays Monday and Tuesday at the UNI-Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids.

Sophomore Greyson Hartman had the best showing for Washington, taking fourth place overall in the boys’ shot put with a toss of 52-and-a-half feet and posting the best throw of any Class 3A boys’ competitor.

Meanwhile, Ty Muniz led Columbus in the boys’ competition by running the best Class 1A time in the 3,200-meter run and finishing ninth overall by clocking in at just over 10 minutes in the two-mile.

Junior teammate Alexander Rees was 14th in the 60-meter hurdles in the preliminary heats for the Wildcats and then hit a Class 1A-best time of 8.72 seconds to finish 14th again in the finals.

On the girls’ side, Washington’s best finish came from senior Kendall Hinrichsen, who was 18th in the 800 meters in two minutes 35.42 seconds. Freshman Jaslyn Villa cracked the top 25 in the long jump, while junior Iris Dahl ran a top-40 time in the 400.

The Demon ladies also got top-40 times from three of their relay teams, including the team of Moore, Villa, junior Leighton Messinger and sophomore Layla Green in the 4-by-200; senior Eden Levetzow, junior Taylor Miksch, sophomore Emma Horak and freshman Lauren Drahota in the 4-by-400; and Horak, Miksch and seniors Isabella Lujan and Alyvia Anderson in the 4-by-800.
