The Sigourney Savages are getting set to take off for a new season of boys’ track and field. Sigourney will have plenty of experienced stars back, like junior Troy Klett, who has won South Iowa Cedar League medals in distance races in back-to-back seasons and is coming off top-five finishes at the conference meet in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs.
Caden Clarahan will be one of the veteran leaders for the Savages after success as both a shot put thrower and a hurdles runner, while fellow senior Jayden Thompson will look for more conference medals in both the shot put and the discus.
Head coach Jared Jensen tells KCII Sports that his team’s greatest asset is a dearth of versatile athletes that can compete in a variety of events and thus that he can mix and match as the season starts.
“We return 13 guys from the previous year’s team, and I think we only had 15 out,” Jensen says. “That’s going to bode well for us. With the group we have coming back from last year, [we are] trying to figure out what some of those guys that were pretty young are going to fit best in [and] where can we put guys together.”
The Sigourney boys will compete for the first time this track and field season March 31st at Pekin.
