Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been found in another commercial flock in Iowa, the sixth detection of avian influenza in domestic birds this year in the state. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a case of avian influenza has been detected in a commercial pullet flock in Buena Vista County.

Governor Kim Reynolds authorized a disaster proclamation for Buena Vista County through April 13th in response to the case. The proclamation allows state resources to assist with tracking and monitoring the situation, as well as containment, disposal, and disinfection.

Poultry producers and dairy farmers are encouraged to increase biosecurity practices and protocols.

At this time, the Centers for Disease Control states the current public health risk is low and staff are monitoring the situation.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking anyone who finds five or more sick or dead flocking birds within a week to report it to their local wildlife biologist or a state conservation officer. Do not approach wild or migratory birds that appear sick or are deceased.
