nws-lightning

The Iowa Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Management and the National Weather Service have named March 24th through the 28th as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. Each day will focus on a different hazard. Monday is targeted toward lightning safety. The CDC estimates there are roughly 40 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes annually in the United States and hundreds of lightning related injuries are reported.

The NWS has adopted the phrase “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”. If you are close enough to hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning. If you are caught in a storm outdoors, avoid open fields or hilltops, avoid large groups, stay away from tall trees and isolated objects, and stay away from water. Indoors, don’t touch electrical equipment or corded appliances such as computers, televisions or cords, avoid showering, avoid exterior windows and doors, stay off balconies, porches and car ports.

Other Severe Weather Awareness Week topics include tornado safety, preparedness, hail and wind safety, and flood safety. Wednesday at 10 a.m. Iowa Homeland Security will conduct a state-wide tornado drill with the Emergency Alert System. KCII will participate, with a description of our Severe Weather Action Team coverage and a conversation with new Keokuk County Emergency Management Coordinator Richard Fortney. The one to count on for up-to-the-minute severe weather coverage is KCII.
