The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves are getting a new girls’ track and field season underway. Among the returners for WMU are senior Josie Nelson, who won a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North championship in the 100-meter hurdles run and reached the Class 1A state meet in that same event.

Sophomore Suttyn Schlee is also back after helping Winfield-Mount Union take second in the conference and reach state in the 4-by-200-meter relay, while freshman Kynlee Buffington is expected to be one of the newcomers that makes an impact in a variety of events. Wolves head coach Amanda Hemsworth tells KCII Sports that their more experienced athletes will lead the way.

“I’m pretty excited about some of the returners that we’ve got,” Hemsworth says. “We’re looking forward to seeing what they can do. Our goal at the end is to improve and hopefully get some girls to state.”

The first outdoor meet of the track season for the WMU girls is the Columbus Invitational later today at Louisa-Muscatine.
