A counselor at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility has been charged with three felonies. According to court documents, from July through October of 2024, 46-year-old Kimberly Joe Kerr is accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with an inmate at the facility while she was employed as a counselor. The inmate told authorities and fellow inmates that the sexual activity happened inside counseling rooms at the prison. Kerr admitted to a relationship, saying that it was romantic, and denied any physical contact. Court documents also show there are love letters sent from Kerr to the inmate.

Along with the allegations of a relationship, during the same period of time, Kerr is accused of conspiring with the same inmate to smuggle contraband, including but not limited to tobacco, into the facility, and she provided it to the inmate. She also set up a cash app account through a third party and received proceeds from these transactions, as inmates would pay for the contraband. Some of the illegal items were seized inside of the prison, leading to further charges. In total, the defendant made more than $5600 in contraband sales.

Kerr is facing three felony charges for ongoing criminal conduct/unlawful activity a Class B felony, sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist and possession of contraband in a correctional institution, both Class D felonies. Her arraignment is set for April 14th.
