Washington Demon boys’ track and field welcomed teams from around southeast Iowa to Case Field Thursday for the annual Steve Roth Relays. Washington was led by sophomore Grayson Hartman, who took second place in the shot put and third in the discus to help the Demons finish tied for fifth in the team scoring in the Class A division.

Junior Josh Anderson also set meet records in the 101, 201 and 401-meter wheelchair races for Washington, while freshman Tyler Lukavsky was third in the 400 meters in Class C.

The Columbus Wildcats would come away with the team title in Class C, and their score of 172 was the second-most points across all divisions. Senior Riley Kaalberg was one of the individual champions for Columbus, leaping 19 feet seven inches to win the Class C long jump.

Kaalberg also helped the Wildcats win the 4-by-100-meter relay alongside fellow senior Juan Chairez, junior Alexander Rees and sophomore Lamar Ceant, recording a cumulative time of 43.91 seconds.

Rees would get a victory in the 200-meter dash in 23.24 seconds, with Kaalberg taking third in that same event, while sophomore Cade Storm took the title in the 400-meter hurdles in one minute 1.62 seconds and senior Ty Muniz won the 3,200 meters in 10:06.

Ceant edged out Rees in the 110 hurdles with a meet-record time of 14.94 seconds, while freshman Lando Garza rounded out Columbus’ winners by taking the open 400 in 57.48, beating senior teammate Bryan Tlatenchi by two-tenths of a second.

The Wildcats got second-place finishes from Kaalberg in the 100 meters and their 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 relays. Bronze medals went to sophomores Fritz Figaro and Ronaldo Villegas in the discus and shot put, respectively, as well as the sprint and distance medleys and the 4-by-200 relay.

The WACO Warriors would finish ninth overall and third in Class C behind a host of medalists. Jude Dykstra would be a victor for WACO, as the junior clocked in at 4:39 to win the 1,600 meters.

The Warriors would take the Class C sprint medley behind Dykstra, sophomore Hayden Shelman and seniors Louden Huisenga and Isaac Rich with a meet-record time of 1:40, and senior Gage Samo would join Dykstra, Shelman and Rich to win the distance medley in just under 3:51.

Shelman would finish second in the long jump, as did Huisenga in the high jump, while Samo claimed third in the long jump. WACO also took silver in the shuttle hurdles relay and bronze in the 4-by-100.

Cooper Buffington earned a gold medal for Winfield-Mount Union in the shot put with a top toss of 48 feet three-and-a-quarter inches, while fellow senior Jake Edwards was third in the high jump. The Wolves were also third in the shuttle hurdles.

The Keota Eagles brought home a win from Case Field thanks to sophomore Ayden Galindo clearing an even six feet in the high jump. The best finish for the Highland Huskies came from junior Elvin Hernandez, who was fourth in the 400 meters.
