Renovations have begun at the John Currie Athletic Complex on the campus of Columbus Schools. At a March meeting, the Columbus board accepted a $352,000 bid from Triple B Construction in Wilton to perform work on the football field including, but not limited to, grading and renovating the grass surface, installation of drainage and irrigation lines, goal posts, site preparations and other related work. Columbus Activities Director Paul Kissell tells KCII News the work happening right now on the grounds, “Triple B Construction started leveling off the field, taking dozens of truckloads of dirt off, to get that more consistent while also replacing the drainage and irrigation system. Those are things you’ll see in the immediate future, they’re working on it now. That leveling process will hopefully be done by the end of May. Traska Landscape out of Solon, has done fields like Highland and West Branch, they’re going to come in for the finishing touches. They’ll feed it and manage it for the first few years to make sure it takes hold. It’s all about creating the best environment for our student-athletes.”

A larger proposal of $575,000 which included work for track upgrades, field turf and other complex improvements was turned down. Due to this work, Columbus is unable to host track and field or soccer events this spring. Track has hosted their home meets at Louisa-Muscatine while soccer will play their home matches at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.
