The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls soccer team dropped their home opener Friday night 5-0 to Solon. The Lady Spartans scored three times before break and added on two insurance tallies in the second half. Niva Helmuth led Mid-Prairie with 14 saves. Golden Hawk head coach Truman Shetler spoke with KCII Sports after the match about what he saw, “At the start of the game we struggled a little bit with some of our stepping. Right in the middle of the first half we figured out that if we just stay in front of somebody, we’ll be alright. We had a pretty good stretch for about the middle 45 minutes or so. The defense was able to figure it out and hopefully that stays that way going forward and happens at the start of games instead of waiting until they’re halfway through the first half. There were a few players we were rotating first half. At one point Solon was so tired they couldn’t stop to the ball, and those are situations that we have to find our forwards and attack. We’ll continue to keep working and that and trying to put pressure on to find some goals. Niva (Helmuth) played well in goal, Lydia (Beachy) played well on the back line and Meadow (Flynn) was good up top.”
Solon is 1-1 on the year as Mid-Prairie falls to 0-2. The Golden Hawks are back on the pitch Monday when they host West Liberty.
