One man has plead guilty to charges stemming from an assault on the pedestrian mall in Iowa City, while court proceedings continue for two others.
According to court documents, Ryan Maschmann of Wayland plead guilty at the end of March to the charges of willful injury, no serious injury and participating in a riot. In court documents it is stated that on December 14th Maschmann admits to “unlawfully and willfully commit[ing] an act against another, with the intent to commit serious injury and cause bodily injury,” and that he did so with multiple other people in a violent manner. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for May 22nd.
The other men linked to the incident in court documents are Landan Provino of the Wayland area and 36-year-old Jared Reed of Crawfordsville. According to court documents, a witness stated a minor altercation had occurred in a bar and then continued outside on the pedestrian mall where the victim was held while others punched him. The victim was treated at the scene for multiple injuries including a broken nose and gash on the head, and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Provino had a plea of not guilty filed on March 17th and a case management conference is scheduled for May 12th.
On March 11, Reed was arrested and court proceedings are ongoing.
The charges of willful injury causing bodily injury and participating in a riot are both class D felonies.
