Due to fires at the Iowa City Landfill, officials are reminding residents in Kalona and Riverside, along with those in Johnson County, of special drop off locations to safely discard certain items. These locations include the Iowa City Emerald Street Fire Station, Iowa City Ace Hardware East and North, Iowa City City Hall, the North Liberty Community Center, North Liberty and Coralville Recreation Center and Hazardous Material Collection Facility at the Iowa City Landfill.

Batteries and battery-controlled devices should not go in regular trash or recycling. Incorrectly discarded batteries are the top cause of landfill and recycling facility fires. In 2025, five fires ignited at the Iowa City Landfill required emergency response.
