Both the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Lone Tree Lions hit the road Thursday to compete in track and field meets. Winfield-Mount Union finished second in the boys’ team scoring at the Falcon Co-Ed Relays in West Burlington, thanks in part to two individual victories from Kohlby Newsom.
Newsom won the 400-meter dash in 51.19 seconds and had the top time of four minutes 37 seconds in the 1,600 meters. Fellow senior Cooper Buffington picked up a win in the discus with a top toss of 126 feet three inches, while the Wolves won the sprint medley relay in one minute 44 seconds and were champions in the shuttle hurdles in 1:09.
Buffington would finish second in the shot put, as would junior Gavin Prior in the 100-meter hurdles and freshman Brayden Cline in the two-mile, while WMU also won a silver medal in the distance medley. Third place went to seniors Levi Walter and Lane Genkinger for the 400 hurdles and open 200, respectively.
The Winfield-Mount Union girls were led by Kynlee Buffington, who again won the 200 meters with a time that was just a tick under 28 seconds flat. The freshman also claimed the crown in the long jump by hitting 16 feet five-and-a-half inches.
Senior Josie Nelson also won for the Wolves in the 100 hurdles in almost 17 seconds and was runner-up in the 400 hurdles, while Buffington was third in the open 400.
Lone Tree took part in the Chad Gates Co-Ed Invitational at West Branch and finished fifth in the girls’ team scoring. The Lions were the champions of the 4-by-200 meters in 1:51 and won the sprint medley in 1:54.
Lone Tree was also third in the 4-by-100, 4-by-400 and 4-by-800. Lions senior Hayden Yoder brought home bronze medals in the shot put and discus, as did junior Jazmine Nino in the 800 meters. Junior Domonic Garcia led the Lone Tree boys with a victory in the 200, crossing the finish line in 23.61 seconds.
