The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls and boys soccer teams were both winners Monday in a pair of River Valley Conference matches against the Monticello Panthers. The Golden Hawk girls opened the night with a 6-1 pounding of the Panthers. The Hawks held a 3-0 lead at half and put up three more after break. Mid-Prairie won shots on goal 28-6 and corner kicks 6-0. Four different Golden Hawks found the back of the net, including the first career hat trick and goals for Brooklyn Schneider. She spoke with KCII Sports after the match about her night, “We’ve been working on finding each other’s feet and I think we did that really well. The more games we’ve played together, we’ve gotten more used to each other and learned to communicate better. I didn’t really have a favorite goal, they all felt the same to me, I just kicked them in!”
She was joined in the scoring column by a goal apiece for Meadow Flynn, Maya Banuelos, and Lydia Beachy. Assists went to Beachy with two and one each for Schneider and Zoey Curtiss. The win is the third-in-a-row for the Golden Hawks who are now 3-2-1 on the year, while Monticello falls to 0-1.
The Mid-Prairie boys shut out the Panthers 3-0 for their first win of the year. The Hawks led 1-0 at half and put up a pair of insurance goals after break to seal the win. Mid-Prairie won shots on goal 15-7. A trio of Golden Hawks ended up with goals including Will Snider, Peyton Fox and Kale Miller. Snider, Ty Huber and Adrian Sanchez each finished with an assist. Jacob Flynn recorded the clean sheet with seven saves. Following the match, Flynn and Snider spoke with KCII Sports about the win.
Snider said, “I think the reason the offense has picked up is the passing. Passing and communication between teammates. (On his goal) I was open, nobody was in front of me. I held the ball for time. Took my shot, top ends!”
Flynn said, “Scoring early helps the defense because it gives us a big confidence boost. It gives us a bit of a cushion. I really like it! Defense is working really well this year Joe (Kelschen) and Traevin (Gugel) are working really well at center back. We have a lot of guys working hard up top, Peyton Fox, John Adams, Will (Snyder) is making some good runs. Everything is starting to heat up!”
The Golden Hawks are now 1-4 this year as Monticello drops to 0-2. The Golden Hawk boys and girls are back on the pitch Thursday when they travel to Cedar Valley Christian.
