The Columbus Wildcats dealt the Highland Huskies their first loss of the soccer season Monday night in Riverside by a final score of 2-1.
Columbus struck twice in the first half to counter a goal from Highland senior Sage Hartley-Norman and would hold on the rest of the way, dropping the Huskies to 1-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 4-1 overall.
The Wildcats would not have the same good fortune the next night at Tipton, trailing by four goals at halftime of a 5-0 defeat. Columbus is now 3-3 to go with a 1-1 start to conference play.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls came close to topping Tipton Tuesday, getting goals from senior Frannie Sosa and sophomore Iris Garza to nearly rally from a halftime deficit but ultimately still falling 3-2. Junior goalkeeper Sarai Martinez made two saves as the Wildcats remain winless after five matches.
