The Washington Demon girls’ track and field dominated Tuesday on their way to winning the Timm Lamb Pen City Relays in Fort Madison. Washington’s team score of 151 points was tops in Class A and best across both divisions.

The Demons were led to a team victory thanks to two individual gold medals for Leighton Messinger. The junior won the 100-meter hurdles run in 16.1 seconds and clocked in at just under one minute 10 seconds to claim the title in the 400-meter hurdles.

Messinger also ran a leg on Washington’s shuttle hurdles relay that posted a winning time that was just a tick under 1:11, along with senior Kendall Hinrichsen, junior Leighton Salazar and sophomore Layla Green.

The Demons also finished third in both the sprint and distance medleys and were second in the other four relays. Iris Dahl added a win for Washington in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 5:16, and the junior was also second in the 3,000.

Other silver medals for the Demons came from Green in the 200; freshman Jaslyn Villa in the long jump; and sophomores Jaedyn Moore and Emma Horak in the 100 and 1,500, respectively. Hinrichsen brought home a third-place finish in the 800, as did freshman Lauren Drahota in the 400.

Winfield-Mount Union competed in the Class B division at Fort Madison and were led by senior Josie Nelson, who was the champion in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.8 seconds.

Kynlee Buffington added a victory for the Wolves in the long jump with a top leap of 16 feet one-half inch. The freshman was also third in the 200 meters, as was WMU’s shuttle hurdles relay.
