April’s showers are making way for spring wildflowers. According to the weekly Woodland Wildflowers report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, a variety of flowers can be spotted in southern Iowa.
Bloodroot, common blue violet, Dutchman’s breeches, rue anemone, Spring beauty, Virginia bluebells, purple cress, largeflower bellwort, and sharp-lobed hepatica are among the plants that can be found blooming along trails in Jefferson County Park.
Henry County is seeing Spring beauty and Dutchman’s breeches reach their peak, along with creeping Charlie. Bloodroot and purple cress are still abundant and common blue violets are blooming. In addition, a few others have bloomed this week including trout lily, downy yellow violets, and the white variety of common blue Violet. In addition, woodland blue phlox is starting to emerge.
In addition, Iowans are encouraged to get outdoors this Tuesday in observance of Earth Day.
