As the weather warms up, the City of Wellman is preparing for its second summer with its new splash pad with the purchase of seating for the surrounding area.

The Wellman City Council unanimously voted to purchase five tables and two benches to add seating for the area. The plan established at Monday’s city council meeting was to have two tables on the west side of the pad, two on the south, and one on the east. The benches will be placed where there is most demand, and the tables could also be moved if seating needs to be concentrated differently.

Council member Fern Bontrager said that she felt the current available seating was too far away from the splash pad for parents and grandparents to adequately supervise their children while playing in the splash pad.

The purchase will be made using funds from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.

While the entire council agreed on the tables, some members wanted to go further, with council member Nathan Klostermann noting that the splash pad was the only area of the park without quick and easy access to a shelter. Discussion was also had on the potential for artificial turf in the area immediately surrounding the pad in order to prevent clogging of the drains from grass clippings making their way into the water.
