One of the great traditions in American track and field will again feature some of the best high school athletes in Iowa over the next three days at the 1115th annual Drake Relays, and a number of local high school track stars are getting set to take their turn on the famous blue oval at the University of Drake in Des Moines.
That includes Washington sophomore Greyson Hartman, who will compete in both the boys’ discus throw and shot put, becoming the first Demon boys’ thrower in program history to compete in both events at the Drake Relays.
Washington will also be a part of the boys’ 4-by-100-meter relay, with junior Kael Williams joining seniors Jayfred Espinosa, Keider Gomez Valdez and Nate Edmonds in the starting lineup.
The Demon girls will also be represented by their 4-by-100 relay. Juniors Leighton Messinger and Leighton Salazar will be joined by sophomores Jaedyn Moore and Layla Green as the starters.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will have one of their youngest stars taking the stage at Drake Stadium. Freshman Jeorgia Evans will run the 100-meter dash and also take part in the long jump, while Mid-Prairie senior Dessa Poll throws in the discus. Senior Burke Berry will represent the Golden Hawk boys in the shot put.
While the girls will also have their 4-by-100 team of Evans, fellow freshman Tessa Bombei, sophomore Myli Hershberger and junior Jovi Evans, the boys will be represented by sophomore Nolan Jergens, junior Kaden Kos and freshmen Ryan Henry and Kendrick Kos.
The Columbus Wildcats will also be running in the boys’ 4-by-100, with the starters including sophomore Lamar Ceant, junior Alexander Rees and seniors Riley Kaalberg and Juan Chairez. Ceant and Rees will also both run in the 110-meter hurdles.
Two other Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams will be in the girls’ 4-by-100. The Lone Tree Lions will be represented by sophomore Addison McCullough, junior Ava Christofferson and seniors Vivian Zaruba and Rylee Shield, while the starters for the Highland Huskies will be senior Lilly Barre, freshman Kamryn Fink and sophomores Alexa Hahn and Hailey Brun.
Hillcrest Academy Ravens junior Owen Scott and WACO Warriors sophomore Hayden Shelman will both compete in the long jump, while Winfield-Mount Union Wolves senior Kohlby Newsom races in the 800 meters.
