The Lone Tree Lions got a big team victory in track and field Tuesday at the Wildcat Girls’ Relays in Durant, finishing with a team score of 115 points that edged out second-place West Liberty by three-and-a-half points and was six better than third-place Davenport North.
It was Lone Tree’s dominance of the relays that again led the way. The team of sophomore Addison McCullough, junior Ava Christofferson and seniors Vivian Zaruba and Rylee Shield would win the 4-by-100-meters for the Lions with a time of 51.86 seconds, and that same quartet would have the top time of one minute 51 seconds in the 4-by-200.
Freshman Addyson Eiben joined Zaruba, Shield and Christofferson to win the 4-by-400 in 4:26, while Lone Tree also finished second in the distance medley and third in both the sprint medley and the 4-by-800.
Zaruba would be the champion of the 100-meter dash in 13.35 seconds, while Shield won the 200 meters in 27.26 and Christofferson leaped 16 feet eight inches for a long jump championship.
Hayden Yoder added a gold medal to the Lions’ total with the top discus throw of 105 feet nine inches. The senior was also second in the shot put, while junior Jazmine Nino was third in the 1,500.
The Highland Huskies competed Tuesday at the Alburnett Co-Ed Senior Night Relays and were led by a victory from freshman Kamryn Fink in the girls’ 100 meters, clocking in at 13.3 seconds to finish a tenth of a second ahead of second place.
Freshman Grace Bombei was second in the 1,500 for Highland, as was sophomore Chloe Sexton in the shot put. Bombei also finished third in the girls’ 800 for the Huskies, while the best finish for the boys came from senior William Dunbar, who was fifth in the 100.
