Washington Demon track and field put on quite a show yesterday while hosting the Washington Girls’ Invitational at Case Field. The Demons finished second in team scoring with 128 points, only 20 behind the winners from Mount Pleasant.

Leighton Messinger had a large hand in Washington’s success. The junior was the champion in the 100-meter hurdles run with a time of 16.03 seconds, and she would win the 400-meter hurdles in one minute eight seconds.

Messinger also ran with senior Kendall Hinrichsen, junior Leighton Salazar and sophomore Layla Green to win the shuttle hurdles relay for the Demons with that same time of 1:08.

Sophomore Jaedyn Moore would give Washington a victory in the 100-meter dash by clocking at 12.78 seconds, while a pair of freshmen also had gold medals. Lauren Drahota ran the top time of 1:03 in the 400 meters, while Jaslyn Villa was the long jump champion by leaping 15 feet seven-and-a-half inches.

The Demons would get one other victory in a special event, as junior Callie Schiebel, sophomore Lyric Wright and freshmen Emma Mullens and Vivienne Kroll teamed up to win the throwers’ relay with a time that was just over one minute flat.

Junior Taylor Miksch would finish second in the discus throw for Washington, as would sophomore Emma Horak in the 1,500 meters and Moore in the 200. The Demons were also second in both the 4-by-200 and 4-by-400-meters while taking third place in the distance medley.
