The Highland Huskies topped the WACO Warriors 6-2 Thursday in Southeast Iowa Super Conference soccer. Highland raced out to a 3-0 lead by the time halftime arrived, and while WACO would counter with a pair of goals in the second half, they wouldn’t be able to keep the Huskies from doubling their total.
Senior Jared Diaz had his third hat trick of the season for Highland by scoring three times, while senior Sage Hartley-Norman and sophomores Jose Ramirez and Hunter Seibel all found the back of the net as well.
Ramirez, junior Jack Krotz and seniors Logan McFarland and Ayden Havel each had assists, while Havel made 12 saves as goalkeeper to help the Huskies improve to 2-2 in Super Conference play and 6-2 overall.
Meanwhile, even though juniors Nick West and Niles Reichenbach scored second-half goals for WACO, a loss means the Warriors fall to 2-4 in the conference and 3-5 in total.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls would also pick up a conference win Thursday, defeating Central Lee 3-0 after going into halftime up 2-0. Senior Frannie Sosa, junior Dahlia Valdez and sophomore Iris Garza had one goal and one assist each to help the Wildcats raise their record to 2-5 and move to an even 1-1 in the Super Conference.
The Columbus boys would not have the same good fortune against Central Lee. Despite getting on the board in the first half, Columbus trailed 3-1 at halftime and would lose by that same margin. The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-5, including a 1-3 league record.
Sigourney-Keota soccer was also on the wrong end of a loss this past week. SK allowed six goals by halftime Thursday against Pella Christian and would end up losing 10-0. As a result, Sigourney-Keota remains winless through seven matches this season.
