Grass is greening, trees are budding, and wildflowers are blooming. This week’s Iowa Department of Natural Resources Woodland Wildflowers Weekly Report shows a variety of wildflowers being spotted in southern Iowa. Along trails in Jefferson County Park, visitors can see bloodroot, common blue violet, Dutchman’s breeches, rue anemone, Spring beauty, Virginia bluebells, white trout lily, wild geranium, prairie trillium, blue phlox and more. Also, Jacob’s ladder is starting to bloom along the Cedar View Trail.
In Henry and Des Moines counties, Spring beauty is at its peak. Also, valley floors are covered with Virginia Bluebells. Small-flowered buttercup and woodland blue phlox blooms are increasing. A few new flowers to spot in woodlands this season are swamp buttercup, Canadian wild ginger, prairie trillium, and garlic mustard.
