The Class 1A and 2A championship games were played last night and it turned out to be a couple of close games. In 1A Exira was taking on Mount Ayr and Exira led a good part of the game. At the end with less than 30-seconds left Exira had the ball and a two point lead after a Mount Ayr basket and in-bounded but Mount Ayr picked off a pass in the back court and got a lay up to tie the game with four seconds left. It looked like they were headed to overtime but Exira in-bounded with a baseball pass to mid-court that was almost picked off but Chelsea Nelson got a holf of the ball, and fired it right underneath the basket to a wide open Ann Walker, she threw it up off the backboard and after bouncing around the rim went through the hoop just after the buzzer sounded. Afterwards Walker described the feeling of watching the ball bounce around the rim as just like in the movies Exira gets the win 57-55. Exira finishes the season unbeaten and the 1A champs. This was their last season for the high school to a girls basketball team, they’ll be joining with Elk Horn-Kimballton.
In the 2A championship game Mount Vernon was battling Manson-NW Webster. Manson-NW Webster led in the first half and going into the second half. Mount Vernon would out score Manson-NW Webster 14-9 in the third and throughout the night used their three point shooting to stay in the game. The game was tied with about a minute to go but a field goal and a couple of free throws gave Mount Vernon a four point lead and they’d get the win 59-56. The Mustangs take the 2A title after winning the volleyball state title and last spring winning the track state title. Mount Vernon went down to 2A this season last season they were knocked out of the girls basketball post season by the Washington Demons in the second round.
