During this spring’s track season, a rivalry quickly developed between Columbus senior Mauricio Ramirez and WACO senior Bryce Achen. The two sprinters squared off several times throughout the season in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. At the Demon Relays in April, both broke the 100 meter dash record.

Running backs Ramirez and Achen will lead their respective schools into battle on the gridiron tomorrow evening as the WACO Warriors host the Columbus Wildcats to open the 2015 season. Last season’s meeting saw Columbus win the game, 37-21.

Ramirez was a factor in last year’s victory for the Wildcats’ victory, rushing for 225 yards and four touchdowns. WACO head football coach Chad Edeker says it should be a good battle between the two running backs, “Both of them (Ramirez and Achen) are going to be tough to stop from a defensive standpoint and hopefully Bryce (Achen) comes out on top of that.” Edeker said, “It is going to come down to which team can contain the other’s running back and keep them from getting out into space.”

Achen carried the football 19 times last season against Columbus, collecting 85 yards and scored one touchdown.

Kickoff between the Columbus Wildcats and WACO Warriors is set for 7 p.m. at WACO High School.
