High voter turn out was witnessed Monday night at the Iowa caucus. Supervisor Richard Young and auditor Dan Widmer said during the supervisor meeting Tuesday morning that they saw high turn out at their precincts. Over 1,500 Republicans voted in Washington County Monday night, with over 200 turning out in the Wellman and Kalona precincts.
Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party Dr. Andy McGuire said approximately 171,000 Democrats took part across the state in the closest Iowa Democratic caucus in history. Hillary Clinton ended up with 49.8% of the vote, Bernie Sanders had 49.6% and Martin O’Malley had 0.5%.
Overall, nearly 187,000 Republicans cast votes Monday night. Ted Cruz won with 27.6% over Donald Trump who had 24.3% and Marco Rubio with 23.1%. In 2008, approximately 119,000 Republicans voted in the caucus.
