Three days into the month of March and the spring sports season is already underway for the Washington Demon track teams. Night one of the annual Demon Indoor Track meet took place Thursday evening at Cornell College in Mount Vernon with 22 area girls track teams taking part in events.
Washington came away with a handful of top 10 performances. The best finishes for the Demons came in the field events. Senior Amber Salow placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet 4 inches, while senior McKayla Miller had the ninth best throw in the shot put event, hurling it 30 feet 10.5 inches.
The Demons had other notable performances on the track. Senior Kelly Wheeler qualified for the finals of the 60 meter dash, recording the eighth best sprint of 8.6 seconds. Freshman Isabel Bailey had the tenth fastest time in the 200 meter dash of 29.1 seconds, while freshman Jenah Griener’s 400 meter dash performance of 1 minute 9 seconds was the 10th best in the event.
Teams from all over the state participated in the meet including: Anamosa, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Center Point-Urbana, Central Lee, Clear Creek Amana, Davenport Central, Davenport North, Des Moines Lincoln, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Highland, Iowa City High, Iowa City Regina, Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, Mason City, Mount Vernon, Solon, West Burlington, and Williamsburg.
The boys’ edition of the Demon Indoor track meet takes place today. First events are set to begin at 4 p.m. at Cornell College.
