Two recent graduates from Winfield-Mount Union High School will continue their baseball careers at an eastern Iowa college. Cornell College Rams head coach Seth Wing joined the PM Sports Page Thursday to discuss his team’s recent season and discuss new recruits joining the program.
Wing told KCII Sports they signed W-MU seniors Darren Hunter and Matthew Niebuhr, citing their strength and athleticism as reasons for recruiting the recent Wolves graduates. Hunter will compete for a starting spot on the infield while Niebuhr will help bolster the Rams’ outfield depth.
Hunter and Niebuhr are the top two power hitting players on the W-MU squad this season. Hunter leads the team in slugging percentage at .531 and Niebuhr is second on the Wolves’ squad at .491. Both players have recorded five doubles and a triple. Hunter has also posted two home runs this season. .
Hunter and Niebuhr join a Rams squad which won 22 games this spring, second most in program history.
The Wolves are 6-13 overall and will begin their postseason run Tuesday in the Class 1A District 10 bracket, facing the Lone Tree Lions (10-12 overall) in the opening round at Highland High School.
