A pig from Washington County named Philip is sitting in the hall of champions at the Iowa State Fair. Philip was named the Grand Champion Market Pig at the FFA market swine contest and was shown by Lexi Marek, a 2013 graduate of Washington High School. Marek told KCII News that she first showed a calico barrow when she was five-years-old at the Iowa State Fair and won that contest, and it came full circle when she won grand champion Friday by showing a calico barrow.

Philip will be part of the Sale of Champions on Saturday, along with all of the other FFA livestock champions, but he won’t be the only pig from Washington County there. Reserve grand champions are also part of the prestigious auction and that title was awarded to McKenna Brinning’s pig. Also, Marek’s younger sister, Macy received reserve champion purebred market swine honors.
