Due to above normal precipitation, Iowa’s farmers only had 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork last week, according to the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. State climatologist Harry Hillaker reported heavy rain across the state, with the heaviest near Decorah with 8.46 inches of precipitation in one night.
Subsoil moisture in Iowa is 66% adequate and 30% very short to short. Topsoil moisture in this corner of the state is similar with 10% very short, 12% short, 71% adequate and seven percent surplus. Last year at this time, only six percent of Iowa was very short to short for topsoil moisture.
