Another convincing win was tallied Friday in Mount Pleasant for the No. 2 Washington Demon football team (3-0 overall; 1-0 Class 3A District 5). As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons road-tripped to Evans Field for the Class 3A District 5 opener versus the Panthers (1-2 overall; 0-1 Class 3A District 5). Washington scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters, catapulting the Demons to a 47-12 victory.
Junior Ryan Reighard, last week’s KCII Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, produced 303 yards of total offense. He rushed for 88 yards on 13 carries and ran in a touchdown. Reighard also completed 10 of 14 pass attempts for 215 yards and connected with Javionn Willis for three touchdowns. Willis finished with six catches for 167 yards and three scores.
The Demon defense put their mark on the game with four takeaways, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Senior Caleb Bex came away with the fumble recoveries. Junior Dalton Myers recorded his first varsity touchdown on an 80-yard interception return in the third quarter. Senior Jacob Reighard grabbed the other interception. Washington’s defense held Mount Pleasant to 27 yards passing, allowing the Panthers to rush for 131 yards.
The victory keeps Washington undefeated three games into the regular season. The Demons are hosting the Solon Spartans (2-1 overall; 1-0 Class 3A District 5) in the school’s third annual Heroes Night Football game this Friday. The Spartans beat the Keokuk Chiefs (2-1 overall; 0-1 Class 3A District 5) 42-0. KCII Sports will have live play-by-play coverage of the game, beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. Friday on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com.
