A shorthanded opponent was no match for the No. 10 Washington Demon wrestling team (12-0) Thursday night. As heard live on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, six forfeits by the Keokuk Chiefs (1-3) propelled Washington to their 15th straight dual win, 64-10. The Demons scored points in five of eight contested matches, taking four weights by fall and another by major decision.

Before the home meet, Washington honored seven seniors who have contributed to 92 dual victories over their high school tenure. The crew of Alex Latcham (126), Kyle Anderson (132), Andrew Waite (138), Austin Hazelett (145), Trey Van Weelden (152), Karlton Skubal (195), and Lane Keeler (220) have combined to win 600 matches.

Anderson, the No. 7 wrestler at 126 pounds, opened the dual by grappling up a weight class against Class 2A No. 2 at 132 pounds, Brandt O’Shea. O’Shea gave Keokuk an early lead with a 4-2 decision victory. Waite pinned Matt Wyatt 26 seconds into the second-period at 138 pounds to give Washington the lead, 6-3. The Demons wouldn’t relinquish the lead again. Hazelett won by forfeit in the 145-pound match. Van Weelden followed with a major decision win, 9-1. Karlton Skubal returned to the lineup at 195 pounds, taking a win by forfeit. Alex Latcham closed the dual with a major decision loss to Ashton Meyers, 9-0.

Washington’s other victories came by pinfall for Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160), Matthew Collett (106), and Walker Ikerd (113). The Demons resume their season Saturday at the Waukee Dual Tournament. First grapples are set for 8:30 a.m. at Waukee High School.
